What We Do

The Advisory Council's activities have been and are quite varied. Some examples of our past work include review of the University's affirmative action plans and diversity initiatives, and the implementation of the University's sexual harassment policy. The Council also has emphasized the role of honor, integrity, and responsible conduct in maintaining Mary Washington's excellence as a learning community. It has assisted in funding projects – from bringing the AIDS quilt to campus on World AIDS Day to the Multicultural Fair and Alternative Spring Breaks – that support the University's Statement of Community Values. Projects and programs that have been supported by the ACDCV include the following:

Women's History Month events:

  • A performance by Dance Matrix
  • A lecture by Annie Wang, journalist and author
  • A reading by Farzaneh Milani, Persian-American poet
  • A production of The Laramie Project (a drama about homophobia and hate crimes)

Take Our Daughters to Work Day

Black History Month events

  • A talk by Lena Williams

Alternative Spring Breaks

  • Habitat for Humanity projects
  • Other service learning projects

Other areas of interest

  • Student Transition Program (STP)
  • Recruitment/retention of minority students, staff, and faculty
  • The annual Multicultural Fair
  • Supporting the implementation of a revised Sexual Harassment policy
