Crime Alert from the UMW Police Department

Crime – Safety Alerts are issued to inform the UMW Campus of any situation that poses a potential threat to the safety of students, facility, staff, and visitors of the campus.

In compliance with the “Timely Notice” provisions of the federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998, the University Police are giving notice of a disturbing crime reported nearby in the City of Fredericksburg.

LOCATION: City of Fredericksburg – College Avenue

The City of Fredericksburg has had several breaking and entering cases of residences and businesses during this week.  One of the locations was in the 800 block of College Ave.   During this incident, the homeowner heard a noise downstairs and made a verbal challenge. A male voice responded by saying “Police, remain upstairs.” This incident occurred on November 2, 2011, at 9 p.m.  The apparent motivation has been larceny.

Although these incidents have not involved UMW properties, we are issuing this safety alert because of their proximity to campus. Students residing at the UMW Apartments or living off-campus in privately leased apartments should exercise additional caution.  If you hear a suspicious noise or suspect someone is in your residence, call 911 immediately and move to a secure location (barricade in place) until police respond.

SUSPECT Info:  Unknown Male

No weapon was displayed during these crimes. No physical assaults have occurred during the aforementioned cases.

Crime Prevention – On and Off Campus

The UMW community and guests are urged to continue good crime prevention practices to include the following:

  • For a suspicious noise or disturbance in your home, call 911 immediately.
  • Be alert and aware of your surroundings while traveling on or off campus.
  • Travel in well lit areas whenever possible, on or off campus.
  • Do not walk alone.

Immediately report any conduct of a suspicious or unusual nature to police. The UMW Police Department may be reached 24 hours a day, every day of the year, at 540/654-1025. The UMW Police also may be reached by calling 4444 from any on-campus phone.  UMW Police maintain direct radio and phone contact with the Fredericksburg Police, 24 hours a day.
