2011 Alumni Association Award Winners

Outstanding Young Alumnus Award – Jonathan J. Cordone ’97
Jonathan J. Cordone is currently a senior vice president and the general counsel of the Export-Import Bank of the United States. The Bank’s mission is to assist in financing the export of U.S. goods and services to international markets.

Before joining the Bank, he served as general counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce and as minority deputy general counsel and minority counsel for Commerce, Trade, and Consumer Protection. Prior to those positions, Jonathan practiced law in New York and Connecticut. He received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law and a bachelor of arts degree in political science from Mary Washington.

Outstanding Young Alumnus Award – Jin Wong ’97
Jin Wong is in his 12th season in the Kansas City Royals organization and his fourth year as Director of Baseball Administration. He joined the Royals as Scouting Operations Coordinator in 2000, was promoted to Manager of Scouting Operations in 2001, to Manager of Baseball Operations in 2002, and to Director of Baseball Operations in 2004. Prior to his time with the Kansas City Royals, he was the Group Sales Manager for the former Triple-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves in Richmond, Va.

Jin earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration at Mary Washington, where he was a Division III All-American in baseball.

Frances Liebenow Armstrong ’36 Service Award — Lloyd Tilton Backstrom ’61
Lloyd Backstrom has served Mary Washington in many capacities. She currently is a member of the UMW Foundation Board of Directors, the Heritage Society, the President’s Council, and the UMW Galleries Advisory Council. She also is a charter member of the UMW Galleries. She has been an active volunteer for many class reunions and has served as class news agent for the alumni magazine.

Lloyd served on the steering committee for the UMW Centennial Campaign, and she has been a participant in numerous Richmond area alumni events. This year, she co-chaired the planning and giving committees for the 50th reunion celebration of the Class of 1961.

Distinguished Alumnus Award – Mary Bradley MacPherson ’71
Mary MacPherson is an industry executive with background in both technology businesses and the non-profit community. She is a recognized expert in entrepreneurship and has extensive experience in technology marketing and business development.

In October 2004, Mary established M2Works LLC. Previously, she served as Senior Vice President of Marketing for Blackboard Inc. and provided leadership for the Morino Institute’s programs, including the operation of Netpreneur. She also worked with MCI and Apple Computer’s Federal Systems Group.

Currently, Mary is Director for the Middle East and North Africa Businesswomen’s Network for Vital Voices Global Partners, a non-profit women’s leadership organization that trains and empowers emerging women leaders and social entrepreneurs around the world. In 2003, Mary was recognized by Women in Technology and the March of Dimes as a Heroine of Technology. In 2001, Washingtonian magazine named her one of the 100 Most Powerful Women in Washington.
