UMW REAL ESTATE FOUNDATION PURCHASES PARK & SHOP
Today, the University of Mary Washington Real Estate Foundation announced that it has purchased the "Park and Shop" retail center near the intersection of College Avenue and Route 1. The foundation plans to create a mixed-use "village," enhancing the current retail space and developing residential, office, and entertainment spaces within a recreational park-like area for students, employees, and members of the community. Learn more at www.umw.edu/village.
AFGHAN STUDENTS EMBRACE UMW CULTURE
Two Afghan students, Nilab Sadat and Zahra Noor, are finishing their first semester at UMW. The two natives of Kabul are the first-ever students from Afghanistan to attend the University. Their four-year study here is made possible through the Initiative to Educate Afghan Women, a nonprofit program that is helping educate Afghan women at 18 colleges in the United States. Read an account of their experiences that appeared in The Free Lance-Star at www.umw.edu/news.
UMW WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM IS NO.1
The UMW women's basketball team remained ranked No.1 in the nation for the second straight week, after the Eagles opened the 2007-08 season. A Dec.1 win (63-18) over Hood College in Capital Athletic Conference action gave Coach Deena Applebury the 100th in her four-plus year coaching career. To find out more, visit www.umw.edu/athletics/sports/basketballwomen.
UMW CENTENNIAL BOOK MAKES A GREAT GIFT
Don't forget to put a copy or two of UMW's Centennial coffee-table book, "University of Mary Washington: Moments in Time," under the Christmas tree for your favorite UMW alumni. Lynda Richardson, a 1981 alumna and renowned wildlife photographer, has spent the past year photographing the University. She has chronicled the campus and captured stunning images of its buildings, its people and its culture.
And why not stuff your Christmas stockings with the latest book releases by UMW faculty, including "Harvest of Changelings" by Warren Rochelle, associate professor of English, and "Restaging the Sixties" edited by James M. Harding, professor of English. To find out more or to order a copy, visit the UMW Bookstore at www.umw.edu/bookstore.
STUDENT-ALUMNI CAREER NETWORKING EVENT
The UMW Alumni Association and the UMW Office of Career Services Office invite you to join them for the annual Washington, D.C.-area Student/Alumni Career Networking Reception on Sunday, January 27, 2008 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Arlington. This casual dessert reception provides alumni an opportunity to help current Mary Washington students who are preparing to enter the job market. Alumni can share their experiences relating to various career paths, industry trends, graduate schools, and much more. If you would like to attend, please click here to register.
Can't make the Alumni Networking Reception but still want to assist current UMW students with career planning? How about becoming a MENTOR? Check out the Alumni Information link on our Career Services website, www.umw.edu/careerservices/alumni/default.php, to find out how you can get involved with this, as well as other, programs.
