OUTSTANDING ALUMNI TO BE HONORED AT REUNION

Reunion Weekend is right around the corner! Join us May 29 - June 1 for a weekend full of activities, including a special performance by MUSE, a 5-member troupe of professional artists, featuring UMW alumni Vicky Nichols Wilder '80 and Carol Thayer Cox '68. Highlights of the weekend include class get-togethers, the annual reunion picnic under a huge tent over Palmieri Plaza, children's activities, and much more. The Alumni Association will honor four outstanding graduates who will receive awards on Saturday, May 31, at the Reunion banquet. Betty Orr White '68 will receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award for outstanding achievement over time in profession or career, civic activities, or in the arts. Nanalou West Sauder '56 will receive the Frances Liebenow Armstrong '36 Award for service to the Alumni Association and the University. Rebecca Erbelding '03 and Harry Thomas, III '97 will receive the Young Alumnus Merit Award. To read more about the recipients, click here.
SIGN UP TODAY FOR ALUMNI COLLEGE
This two-day educational event is the perfect opportunity to step back into the classroom with UMW professors on both campuses. Choose five different subject areas to learn about timely topics including Islamic civilization, historic preservation, environmental issues, bird watching, geographic information systems and interpersonal communication. ALUMNI COLLEGE is May 29 and May 30; registration is open to all. Fee is $95 per person and includes transportation to the Stafford campus, lunch each day, one breakfast and a reception at historic Brompton.

BE PART OF THE CENTENNIAL CAMPAIGN
The University officially launched the $75 million Centennial Campaign during a celebration dinner March 14, 2008. Nearly 300 guests were in attendance, along with Pulitzer-Prize winning author David McCullough and National Campaign Chairs William B. Crawley Jr. and Theresa Young Crawley '77.

UMW OFFERS MULTIPLE TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES
During the next 18 months, you can literally travel around the world with Mary Washington. Following is a short description of the exciting trips currently being planned:
October 4 to 12, 2008 - Tuscany registration deadline has been extended. Sign up now and see the enchanting towns of Siena, San Gimignano, Montalcino, Florence. For more information, please contact the Alumni Office at (540) 654-1011.
December 27, 2008 to January 8, 2009. Spend New Year's in South Africa with the President's Travel Club. Explore the geography, see wildlife up close and personal, and enjoy the best of South African dining and shopping from Kruger National Park to Cape Town. You won't want to miss the voyage on the world famous Blue Train. Reservations will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis; priority booking is given to members of the President's Council. February 8 to February 21, 2009 - Expedition to Antarctica. Begin in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and embark on a journey of discovery through towering mountains of ice and lava to see a vast array of wildlife.
June,6 to June 16, 2009 - The Danube River & Habsburg Empire. See the castles, palaces, and cathedrals of Central Europe's from Budapest to Vienna and enjoy a luxury cruise on the Danube River.
June 22 to July 4, 2009 - Cruising the Baltic Sea & Norwegian Fjords. Cruise from the beautiful Swedish capital of Stockholm to the medieval port of Bergen, Norway, while enjoying stunning views of Scandinavia's architecture and historic ports.
June 27 to July 7, 2009 - Great Journey through Europe. Explore the cultural and scenic treasures of the heart of Europe by ship and rail tracing the Rhine River from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea.
July 26 to August 3, 2009 - Village Life in England's Cotswolds. Immerse yourself in the heart of the English countryside and visit Oxford, Gloucester Cathedral, traditional villages, and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill.
September 27 to October 5, 2009 - Island Life in Ancient Greece. Journey across the Aegean Sea through the Greek Isles and to Turkey's historic coast while visiting the sites devoted to many of mythology's greatest heroes.

SENATOR JOHN WARNER ADDRESSES GRADUATES
Senator John Warner delivered perhaps his final commencement address as a U.S. senator at UMW's 97th annual commencement on Saturday, May 10. Approximately 5,000 people gathered on Ball Circle as a total of 1217 degrees were awarded. For a complete list of graduates, www.umw.edu/news/%3Fa%3D1109.
Warner urged the class of 2008 to give back to the community, to help save the environment and to hold onto the friendships made at the University. He also became a member of the Centennial class, after being awarded an honorary doctorate of humane letters by the University. To read more, visit www.umw.edu/news/%3Fa%3D1113.
Members of the UMW faculty also honored include:
Margaret Huber, distinguished professor of anthropology, who received the Grellet C. Simpson Award.
Keith Mellinger, assistant professor of mathematics, who received the UMW Alumni Association Outstanding Young Faculty Member Award.
W. Brown Morton III, professor emeritus of historic preservation, who was awarded the Mary W. Pinschmidt Award.
Brenda E. Vogel, professor of education and director of education programs, who received the CGPS Outstanding Faculty Member Award.

UMW PARTICIPATES IN MARINE CORPS HALF MARATHON
The inaugural U.S. Marine Corps Historic Half Marathon in Fredericksburg on Saturday, May 18, featured a "Centennial Relay" of 13 employees, students, and alumni each running one mile of the race, with the UMW Eagle completing the final .1 mile. All runners wore bib number 100 in honor of UMW's anniversary. The University helped sponsor the event and staffed a water stop along the course that stretched down Sunken Road below the campus. UMW also hosted a free community concert and tours of Mary Washington on the Saturday before the race.
