UMW 'TREASURES' IN LIBRARY EXHIBITION

FOUNDERS DAY FEATURES MCCULLOUGH, GOV.  KAINE

picturePulitzer-Prize-winning historian David McCullough will be the keynote speaker at UMW’s Founders Day Convocation on Friday, March 14. The ceremony, which will feature greetings by Gov. Tim Kaine, will be held at 3 p.m. in Dodd Auditorium, George Washington Hall. The processional will include a representative from most graduating classes, starting with 1936.

The convocation ceremony is free, but tickets are required and will be available after February 20 on a first-come, first-served basis by calling (540) 654-1055.
Other Founders Week events include:

  • Opening reception for UMW-Community Art Show “100 Years Together” on Friday, March 7 in the Jepson Alumni Executive Center. Read a recent article about the show in The Free Lance-Star at www.fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2008/022008/02072008/0207umwart.

The Centennial Celebration has sparked numerous other projects, including:

  • The UMW Digital Archive that stores and preserves photos from UMW’s storied past. Historic images are a click away at http://archive.umw.edu. Alumni are encouraged to add information to images already archived and to share nostalgic photos of their own on a related blog. Photographs also will be collected in George Washington Hall, Room 106 on Founders Day in order to be scanned for the archival collection. These will be returned to alumni by mail.

“University of Mary Washington: Moments in Time,” a beautifully illustrated coffee-table book by renowned wildlife photographer Lynda Richardson, ’81, featuring stunning images of the University that were captured over the course of a year. To order your own copy, visit www.umw.edu/bookstore.

WARNER TO SPEAK AT COMMENCEMENT, MAY 10
Senator John Warner will serve as UMW’s 2008 commencement speaker at the 9 a.m. ceremony on Saturday, May 10 in Ball Circle. Warner, who is in his 30th year in the U.S. Senate, is the second-longest serving senator from Virginia in the Senate’s 218-year history. To find out more, visit www.umw.edu/news/?a=773.

STAFFORD CAMPUS BUILDING GOES GREEN

CGPSUMW’s new building at the College of Graduate and Professional Studies has received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. This achievement puts UMW at the local forefront of a green building movement sweeping Virginia and the United States, and it positions the University among a small handful of Virginia colleges with buildings that are LEED certified. BASKETBALL TEAM IS AMONG TOPS IN LEAGUE    basketball

The UMW basketball teams find themselves among the elite of the Capital Athletic Conference, with the women’s team tied for first place in the league standings with a 20-2 overall record entering the final week of the regular season, and with the men solidly in second place in the league with a 14-7 overall record and 9-4 mark in the conference. CELEBRATE REUNION WEEKEND MAY 30-JUNE 1

rw LOGOMark your calendar to return to Mary Washington for Reunion Weekend, which will be bigger and better than ever. In addition to increased opportunities for class get-togethers, the huge tent over Palmieri Plaza for the reunion picnic, and Saturday's children's activities, we're offering two new events this year. Begin the weekend early with Thursday and Friday's "Alumni College," May 29 and 30. There you'll learn from UMW faculty and enjoy classes - without quizzes! Friday afternoon, MUSE, a five-member professional troupe, will present a special performance of "Celebrating the Cycle of Life through Art, Dance, Music, and Poetry," featuring UMW alumni Vicky Nichols Wilder '80 and Carol Thayer Cox '68.
Registration for Reunion Weekend will be available via mail and online in mid-March.

UMW ON THE ROAD

The University of Mary Washington invites you to attend a "UMW on the Road" event this spring.  Upcoming "UMW on the Road" events are scheduled in Atlanta, Naples, West Palm Beach, Jacksonville, Orlando and Roanoke.  More locations will be announced soon.

PRESIDENT'S TRAVEL CLUB UPDATES

May 30 to June 10, 2008:

Make your reservation today for the President's Travel Club excursion, "The Romantic Rhine from Amsterdam to Basel aboard the River Cloud."  Mary Washington alumni and friends will join guests and lecturers from Dartmouth College and Colonial Williamsburg for this historic exploration of the Netherlands and Switzerland, May 30 to June 10, 2008. Lecturers will include Cary Carson, former vice president for research at Colonial Williamsburg, Dartmouth College Professor of English Emeritus Peter Saccio, and internationally acclaimed husband-and-wife piano duo Jung Mi Lee and Jon Sakata. Late December 2008 to early January 2009:

If you've always wanted to go on an African safari, stay tuned for the official announcement of the next President's Travel Club expedition to South Africa.  The trip is currently in the planning stage, but it will include safaris in Kruger National Park, a visit to beautiful Cape Town, a ride on the Blue Train down South Africa's famous Garden Route, and an unforgettable New Year's Eve celebration at a luxury lodge in the African bush. EIR PROGRAM SPOTLIGHTS UMW ENTREPRENEURS

eirA special centennial segment of the Executive-in Residence program is showcasing UMW alumni who are successful entrepreneurs. The spring programs will take place on Tuesday, March 24 at the College of Graduate and Professional Studies and Wednesday, March 25 at the Jepson Alumni Executive Center. Business owners include Iris Harrell ’69 (pictured), founder of Harrell Remodeling, Inc., a residential construction company in California; Gaynelle Parrish Grizzard ’50, co-owner of Southeastern Mill, a flour, cornmeal, grits, and specialty mix producer in Georgia; Doug Simpson ’04, MBA ’07, owner of Adasphere, a technical solutions development company near Charlottesville, Va.; and Sarah Armstrong Gregg ’48, former vice president of Federated Department Stores.

UMW ‘TREASURES’ IN LIBRARY EXHIBITION

libraryUMW’s Simpson Library will present the exhibition “Simpson’s Secret Treasures: A Century of Special Collections, 1908 -2008.” The exhibition, which runs through May 15, highlights documents and artifacts from the University’s 100-year history and showcase gems from the library’s rare book collection.
