“Overall, everything seems bigger,” she says. “I’ve never objected to improvements, so I think all the changes and growth are wonderful. I know my granddaughter, Ann, loves Mary Washington as it is today.”

But Lois did notice a few things missing, including a golf course and the swimming pool where she conquered her fear of water. “To receive my two-year diploma in business, I had to pass swimming,” she says. “My mother had a fear of water, which she passed down to me – but I was determined to overcome that fear and learn to swim.” Lois did pass the swimming test, and she later made sure her children all learned to swim as well.

Lois’s walk down memory lane included a mention or two of Mrs. Bushnell. Apparently, Mrs. Bushnell had heard Lois practicing the accordion, so she coerced the young student into playing for an audience. “I did it,” says Lois, “but the next time my mother came to visit, I sent the accordion back home. We were all just a bit scared of Mrs. Bushnell, but we also loved her.”

Born in Roanoke, Va., Lois says her initial decision to come to Mary Washington was easy. “My daddy owned a printing company, so he used to go to Richmond to bid on college catalogs,” she says. “When I was a junior in high school, he brought home five catalogs, and I read each one. We eventually visited Mary Washington, the Dean took us on a tour, and that was it. I could hardly wait to come.” Lois shared the Mary Washington catalog with friends, and she says it influenced about 12 other Roanoke-area girls to apply.

When she first came to campus in 1939, Lois was a bit shy, but being at Mary Washington “brought her out.” She learned to talk more, participated in radio broadcasts, and expanded her network of friends. “I was so happy to have a ‘Northerner’ for a roommate,” she says. “We became good friends, she came home with me for Thanksgiving, and she attended my wedding years later when I ended up marrying a Yankee from Rhode Island.”

Lois and her late husband, John, raised six children – all can swim and all have college degrees. She has 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. But, she and her granddaughter, Ann, now have a special connection that began in 1939 and continues into this century. “I was so happy when Ann decided to go to Mary Washington. She’s a real smart girl, and I’m proud of her,” Lois says. “Mary Washington helped make me a more interesting person, and I’ve had a good, wonderful life. I can only wish as much for future generations.”

This year, the student-run Community Outreach and Resources (COAR) team organized three alternative spring break trips, in Wilmington, N.C., Avery County, N.C., and Cookeville, Tenn., from March 3 through 11. At each location, the students collaborated with Habitat for Humanity to help eliminate substandard housing.

Sophomore Regina Weiss is amazed by the construction skills she has acquired after participating in both the alternative fall and spring breaks, and also realizes how valuable her efforts are to the communities.

“Working with Habitat provides such a sense of accomplishment and purpose,” Weiss said.  “Instead of lying around my house for a week in March, I’m helping to build someone’s house.  The differences our groups make in families’ lives are incredible.”

When the rash of tornadoes tore through the Tennessee Valley several weeks ago, the Cookeville group made their way to Overton County, Tenn., a small community just south of the Kentucky border.

In Overton, the students worked with residents to clear debris and sort donations.

In Wilmington, N.C., over a dozen Mary Washington alumni welcomed students to town and hosted them for dinner at a local restaurant.  The group thanked the students for their hard work and dedication to community service.
