UMW AMBASSADORS • "Students Now, Alumni Forever"
The UMW Ambassadors is the Alumni Association's student volunteer group. UMW Ambassadors travel to regional alumni events, provide student support for Homecoming and Reunion Weekend, help with events at the Jepson Alumni Executive Center, and assist the Fredericksburg Chapter with packing and delivery of "final exam survival kits" for students from their parents.
For more information, contact Emily Ritchie '10 or Jonathan Putty '10, UMW Ambassadors Organizational Chairs.
The mission of the UMW Ambassadors is to foster appreciation for and a lasting commitment to the University of Mary Washington, through programs and activities that provide service to the university, and strengthen links between students, alumni, the university, and the community.
Membership is open to any student interested in strengthening community and loyalty among the UMW constituencies, and developing strong leadership and public relations skills.
So, what does being an AMBASSADOR entail?
The University of Mary Washington has a diverse and active alumni population of more than 30,000 people across the country and throughout the world! While each graduate of UMW has chosen a different path, each one started here on our beautiful Fredericksburg campus. UMW Ambassadors provide volunteer support for and involvement in alumni activities and programs. They also help keep alumni informed and up-to-date about campus events and student life.
A few ways in which our student AMBASSADORS interact with alumni include:
- Volunteering at the Homecoming - Cheer on the Eagles while meeting and greeting recent UMW graduates.
- Packing and delivering Survival Kits - A Fredericksburg Chapter fundraiser, these kits are available for parents to purchase and include an assortment of goodies designed to make college life a little easier (and a little more fun!) for you.
- Assisting with the Fredericksburg Forum - A highlight of each semester is the Fredericksburg Forum, at which renowned speakers from different walks of life present a program in Dodd Auditorium. The Forums sell out early every year but AMBASSADORS who assist with the program may sit in for free.
- Attending local Alumni chapter events - What could be more fun than mingling with UMW grads at exciting events in places like Washington, D.C., Richmond, and Baltimore, to name a few? The AMBASSADORS represent the student population at these alumni events. Alumni are interested in student life, and always have great stories to share from their own undergrad days!!
- Helping with the annual Reunion Weekend - After campus empties out for the summer, the alumni return for a weekend of fun! AMBASSADORS give campus tours, attend class events, and help with general duties for the weekend. Watch out for the members of the UMW Golden Society – they may have graduated more than 50 years ago, but they always return in droves to re-live their college days. You will always remember the people you meet and the stories you hear at Reunion Weekend!
