UMW's Rossi Named to ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Baseball Team; Gorman Wins Regional Rawlings Gold Glove

University of Mary Washington senior Alex Rossi (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) has been named as an honorable mention all-region selection from the American Baseball Coaches Association and Rawlings. Rossi hit .397 this season, with 11 doubles and two home runs, with 41 RBI and 37 runs scored for the Eagles. Classmate Riley Gorman (Machipango, Va./Northampton) was named to the South Region ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove team. The senior center fielder did not commit an error in 71 chances through 39 games for UMW in 2008. •more

UMW Baseball Tops Christopher Newport, 5-3

After being limited to one infield single through six innings, the University of Mary Washington baseball team used a five run, five hit seventh to top USA South Conference champion Christopher Newport University, 5-3, on Friday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 25-12 on the season, while the Captains fall to 27-10. •more

UMW Baseball Tops Salisbury, 16-15, in CAC Championship Round; Fall in Final, 20-5

The University of Mary Washington baseball team allowed the tying run in the top of the ninth inning, but senior Jon Sims led off the bottom of the ninth with a home run to propel the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 16-15 win over fifth ranked Salisbury University on Saturday in the first game of the championship round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. With the win, the Eagles snap the Sea Gulls' 35-game win streak, but fell in the final game to the Sea Gulls, 20-5. •more

UMW Baseball Falls at Salisbury in CAC Tourney Winner's Bracket; Rebounds to Top Villa Julie, 9-4, to Reach Championship Round

The University of Mary Washington baseball team took a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning against fifth ranked Salisbury University, but the Sea Gulls scored three in the seventh to claim an 8-6 win over the Eagles in the winner's bracket of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday morning. The Eagles, 23-11 on the season, rebounded for a 9-4 victory over Villa Julie College later in the day to reach the championship round against Salisbury on Sunday at noon. •more

UMW Baseball Tops Wesley, 22-0, in CAC Tournament Second Round

The University of Mary Washington baseball team erupted for 22 runs on 25 hits, and junior Wes Hayden pitched six shutout innings to lead the Eagles to a 22-0 victory over Wesley College in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament second round on Thursday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles, 22-10 on the season, advance to the winner's bracket of the tournament, and will visit fifth ranked Salisbury University on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the weekend portion of the event. •more

UMW Baseball Tops Villa Julie, 8-5, in CAC Tourney Opener; 500th Win in Program History

Junior righty Andrew Cox allowed one earned run in 8.2 innings, striking out 10 batters to propel the University of Mary Washington baseball team to an8-5 win over Villa Julie College on Tuesday in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 21-10 with the 500th victory in program history, and will host a second round game on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. •more

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 5-3 decision to sixth ranked Salisbury University on Wednesday at Dickinson Stadium to fall to 19-8 overall on the season and 12-4 in Capital Athletic Conference play. The eagles will be the second seed in next week's CAC Tournament. •more

Mary Washington sophomore 3B WILL WRIGHT (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Priory) was named the Capital Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week for April 7, 2008 after hitting .615 (8-for-13) with five runs scored and three RBI in a three-game series against Villa Julie, helping the Eagles clinch at least second place in the CAC. Wright contributed four hits in the last two innings of UMW's come-from-behind victories over the Mustangs. •more

Sophomore third baseman Will Wright collected three doubles and five hits, and juniors Wes Hayden and Andrew Cox each tossed complete games to lead the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of visiting York College, 9-5 and 14-3, on Saturday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles, winners of five straight and eight of their last nine, improve to 15-4 overall and 7-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play, while York falls to 4-12 and 3-3. •more
