UMW HEAD Baseball Head Coach Tom Sheridan

SheridanOne of the winningest coaches in all of NCAA baseball, Mary Washington's Tom Sheridan has in eighteen years developed the program from scratch, turning it into a national power. Since 1988, Sheridan's teams have won 444 games, lost just 183, and tied two. Along the way, UMW has certainly gained its share of awards. In addition to winning the Blue/Grey Conference title in 1988 and 1989, the Eagles have won seven Capital Athletic Conference crowns, with Sheridan being named conference Coach of the Year on eleven occasions. In 2005, he became one of just a handful of coaches in the history of Division III baseball to earn his 400th career victory, defeating Salisbury University. He led UMW to its best seasons ever in 2003 and 2004, reaching the 30-win plateau in each season, and won 27 games in 2005 and 26 last season.
The twentieth-year head coach has led the Eagles to ECAC South Regional final appearances in 1989 and 1990, and has guided ten of his last sixteen squads to NCAA Tournament appearances. The Virginia State College Division Coach of the Year in 1994 and 1998, Sheridan began his coaching career as an assistant at the University of Scranton in 1979. After two seasons, he moved to James Madison University, and helped guide the Dukes to an appearance in the 1983 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

A native of Scranton, PA, Sheridan is a renowned baseball clinician and speaker, having spoken at clinics with some of the top names in college baseball, including Skip Bertman, "Itch" Jones and Pat McMahon. He earned his bachelor's degree from Lock Haven University in 1978, and his master's from JMU in education, with an additional certificate in athletic administration. He served as graduate assistant coach for two years at JMU, and then stayed on for four more years as an assistant while working as the school's associate director of financial aid. The Dukes were 202-97-1 during Sheridan's tenure, and participated in five postseason tournaments, including the College World Series in 1983.

During his coaching tenure, he has had a hand in developing a number of professional players, including several major leaguers. Sheridan, who is also an assistant athletic director at UMW, lives in Woodbridge with his wife Eileen, and daughter Katy.

Assistant Coach Matt Fitzgerald Matt Fitzgerald

Matt Fitzgerald joins the UMW baseball program as assistant coach for the 2008 season. As a player, Fitzgerald led his Chesapeake Junior College team to the JUCO College World Series, and later played at Averett University.
Fitzgerald will assist in all facets of the team, concentrating with the catchers and hitters.

The Eagles welcome back seventh-year assistant coach Dave Brennan to the fold for the 2007 season. A highly successful coach with a multisport background, Brennan was a standout four-year quarterback and kicker in college. As the athletic director and head baseball coach at Orr City High School near Longview, Texas, Brennan’s squads ranked among the best in the entire state. Brennan, who is the owner of the Dominion Eagle Financial Group, lives in Spotsylvania with his wife Jeanie and their family.
