The architect of the three greatest seasons in UMW women's basketball history in just four years at the helm, Deena Applebury has in a very short time brought UMW women's basketball to the forefront in NCAA Division III basketball circles. In 2004-05, she led the Eagles to a 23-7 overall record, an improvement of 11 wins and six losses from her first season, in 2003-04, which was one of the the best improvements, record-wise, in the nation at any level. Applebury also led the Eagles to their first-ever Capital Athletic Conference championship, and to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. For her impressive breakout season, Applebury was named by her peers as the CAC Coach of the Year. 2005-06 saw the Eagles climb to even greater heights, winning their first 27 games en route to the NCAA Sweet 16. Applebury was named CAC Coach of the Year, and was consensus Atlantic Region Coach of the Year as well. This winter, she was named Division III National Coach of the Year by WBCA/Russell Athletic after leading the team to the Final Four in a record-breaking 31-3 season. Her career record at UMW of 95-25 (.792 winning pct.) is punctuated by a 60-5 mark over the past two seasons (.923 win pct.).

Applebury came to UMW after one season as an assistant women's coach at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. After a two-year playing career at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Applebury started her basketball coaching career when she joined on as assistant coach at Rosary High School in St. Louis. In her two-year stay, she helped coach the team to the Missouri 3A Girl's Basketball State Championship in 1998.

From 1999-2001, Applebury was the head varsity basketball coach at Warrenton, Missouri High School. She helped the team to a 19-8 record, which marked the school's best record in history. Applebury was also named the 3A and 4A Coach of the Year for the Northeast District of the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association.

Applebury is a graduate of Versailles High School in Versailles, MO, and gained her Masters in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Physical Education from UM-St. Louis in January of 2003. She received her Bachelors of Science in Education from UM-St. Louis in 1999 and graduated cum laude. She was also a member of the Riverwomen women's basketball team for two years. As a player, Applebury averaged 19.8 points, 3.9 rebounds per game and posted the fourth best single season output in school history with 534 points her senior year.

Assistant coach casey mummah Assistant Coach Casey Mummah

Casey Mummah is completing her second year as an assistant coach for the UMW women’s basketball team and provides support for both Coach Applebury and the players. Mummah's two years have been the most successful at UMW in its history, with a 60-5 combined record. Mummah received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Grove City (Pa.) College in 2002. In addition to coaching basketball at UMW, she also coaches middle school softball.
