2006-07 UMW Men's Rowing Season in Review
The University of Mary Washington men’s rowing program continued to evolve into a regional power in 2006-2007, as the Eagles, while not great in numbers, were most powerful in the boats.
The Eagles opened the fall season at the Occoquan Challenge, where the varsity double took fourth place in its race. One week later, the varsity four and varsity double competed at the Occoquan Chase, with the double finishing fourth again and the four taking eighth place.
The fall race season culminated with a pair of strong finishes at the Head of the Occoquan Regatta, with the varsity eight taking fifth place, and the varsity four taking eighth place among 22 boats. The fall season was capped by a special boat dedication ceremony at Homecoming, which saw many of the integral figures in the program’s history return to have the team’s shells named in their honor.
The men’s varsity four opened the spring season fresh off a competitive training season that included the team’s annual trip to Gainesville, Georgia for Spring Break. The men’s four, which included Matt Adler, Sebastian Watt, Daniel Smith, William Payne, and Kelley Wheaton, began the racing season with a solid second place finish at the Occoquan Sprints. That finish was duplicated the following weekend at the Knecht Cup, but this time they proved their mettle by sprinting through another crew to take the silver.
After a two week break the boat finished in third place at the Mid-Atlantic Division III Rowing Championships. Disappointed with this performance, the crew defended the varsity four’s title at the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Crew Championships. The final race of the season, at the ECAC Nationals, was cancelled due to weather.
With all four rowers returning and a promising recruiting class, the men are looking to improve upon this year’s results with an even stronger 2007-2008.
