Women's Track & Field 2007 in Review
The women’s track & field team began the indoor season in December, and continued to produce quality results through the completion of outdoor season in late May. Among those who showed flashes of brilliance during the indoor season were Jen Garrott, Chia and Mae Winchester, and Julia Rothlisberger. The eagles closed the indoor season with a fourth place finish at the Mason Dixon Invitational, who received first place finishes from Garrott in the pole vault and Falcone in the mile.
The Eagles opened the outdoor season with a first place finish at the Washington & Lee University Invitational, with junior Carly Hambley winning the high jump, long jump, and triple jump and Melissa Presti topping the discus results.
Megan Linn, Falcone, Tripp, and Chia Winchester highlighted the Eagles’ performance the following week at Towson University, and Hambley again swept the three jumping events the following week as UMW hosted the annual Battleground Relays. Garrott won the pole vault, and Megan Linn won the discus in the home meet.
The Eagles prepared for the conference championships with events at Duke University and Messiah College, and that work paid off with one of the most thrilling Capital Athletic Conference championships in the league’s history. UMW finished first - no surprise, as the Eagles have claimed all 14 CAC Championships since the inception of the league - by the narrow margin of just four points, as Hambley gained CAC Athlete of the Year honors, and Coach Soper claimed Coach of the Year kudos. Hambley won the triple jump and set a CAC record in the 400 meter hurdles, while Linn, Garrott, Mae Winchester, and Ann Tripp also gained event wins. Winchester and Hambley concluded the day having competed in six events, as UMW’s 20-member contingent withstood all comers for its unprecedented 14th straight league crown in a true display of team effort.
The 4x400 meter relay, consisting of Chia Winchester, Julia Rothlisberger, Hambley, and Mae Winchester, then set a season-best time, finishing first in its heat at the Penn Relays. Falcone set a PR in the steeplechase with an NCAA provisional time. Garrott and Chia Winchester concluded the season with strong performances at Lynchburg and Swarthmore.
