Dahlgren Higher Education and Research Center
OVERVIEW
The University of Mary Washington (UMW) is approaching the completion of its due diligence efforts in the process to purchase land for the new Dahlgren Higher Education and Research Center (Center) in King George County. At present, UMW is in final negotiations with the property owner, and once the agreement is finalized, several State agencies(including the Governor's Office) must approve the sale. All indications are that the purchase will take place in the next 30 days.
On April 23, 2008, the Virginia legislature approved a nearly $1.5 billion bond package to finance state construction projects through public borrowing, including the Dahlgren Center. Governor Kaine signed the legislation May 29, 2008. Following A/E procurement, UMW has selected Burt-Hill, Inc. as the project architect, and will advance the project through inclusive design meetings with stakeholders Fall 2008.
Under the direction of Mr. Richard Hurley, UMW is in the process of forming an internal Executive Committee and an internal/external Advisory Committee to support project operations and planning. The University continues development of a professional and streamlined operations plan for the Center.
