Ways To Be Involved

We welcome the involvement of alumni in assisting current UMW students with their career planning process. In fact, we depend on an active group of alumni to provide "real world" contacts for our students. Even if you live far away or don't have much time, we have programs you can participate in.

  • Serve as a Career Mentor or provide an informational interview to a student
  • Participate in the Externship Program
  • List internship and full-time positions for UMW students
  • Participate in the annual Networking Reception

Mentor/Information Interview Database - Alumni and friends of the University participating in this program offer to provide career related information via phone or email. Students use this program to find information about jobs, graduate school programs, employers or a particular city or region. Complete the Mentor/Information Interview Form and send it to Career Services via email or mail. We will enter the information into a secure online database entitled eRecruiting and will send you a username and password so that you can update your profile as needed.

Externship Program - This program allows you to sponsor a student in a short - term, shadowing experience at your workplace. Ranging from one to five days, this experience may involve the student in a brief project or simply expose them to your organization. A link for a form to submit for this program is also available on the right hand toolbar.

Internship Program - You may have even taken advantage of this program when you were a student. We can list internships free of charge on our web site and allow you to search candidate resumes via the same site. Visit the Employer page for more information.

Full-Time Positions - Of course you know what great employees UMW graduates make, so if you our your company have full-time positions to fill, why not post the position with us! Similar to listing an internship, and also free of charge, visit the Information for Employers page link on the left side of the page or call 540/654-1022 for more information.

Networking Reception - Each January or February, in conjunction with Alumni Relations, we sponsor a reception for current UMW students and alumni living in the Northern Virginia area. This is an informal setting for alumni to share career experiences and advice with students.
