In addition to seeing students in an individual appointments basis, Career Services offers more than 15 career related workshops and programs during the fall and spring semester covering the topics below and more. Please review upcoming workshops and events by visiting our Calendar of Events.

Choosing a major/career: Career Services has many resources that can help students decide on their majors. The Career Services resource center has copies of one page handouts entitled “What can I do with a major in…” and books on choosing a major. Career Services also provides two career assessment tools entitled Myplan (located online) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator that can aid students in their major/career research. In addition, Career Services presents a workshop each semester on choosing a major.

Preparing for an interview: Students can schedule a mock interview with an employer or a career counselor to practice and receive feedback on their job or graduate school interview skills.

Connecting with alumni: Career Services maintains a database of Career Mentors, mostly UMW alumni, who have volunteered to talk to students about their career fields, choosing a major, preparing for graduate school, and more. The database is located in the resource center of Career Services as well as in a online password protected database called eRecruiting.

Preparing for graduate school: We have resources to help students to locate, research, and apply for graduate schools across the country. Career Services also offers transportation to the annual Graduate and Professional School Fair, held at the University of Virginia in September or October.

Credential Files: Students who are completing the Teacher Licensure Program or planning on attending graduate school may establish a Credential File. Career Services maintains the file and mails it to organizations upon the students’ request. Students may ask faculty to write reference letters to be included in the file. The references letters may be marked “confidential” or “non-confidential” based on the faculty members’ preference. Students find this service a convenient way to contain and mail out required application supplement information.
