Final offer…questions to consider
There are many factors to consider before accepting a job offer, especially if you have a family. The following questions are just a few you may find yourself answering, when comparing your current job to a new job offer.
- Does the position require you to relocate? Is relocation money available?
- Will your spouse be able to find satisfying work in the new location’s market?
- Is the cost of living higher in the new location? Does the offered salary reflect it?
- What is the travel distance to work everyday (wear and tear on your car/bus pass)?
- Is parking available close to the building or a block away? Is there an assigned parking space available for you?
- Will you have to buy a whole new wardrobe to fit in?
- Is there a possibility of a sign-on bonus?
- Is the benefit package equal to your last package, including family rates?
- If travel is required; are there incentives and perks for traveling extended periods of time?
- Is coffee, soda, or lunch provided free of cost frequently, infrequently, or never during the work day?
- Will you be working with innovators in your field?
- Will the work be gratifying for you?
- Will your children have the same opportunities if relocation is required?
- If required to move, is the real estate similar to your current location?
Everything is negotiable. But what exactly is everything? Salary is the first thing that individuals try to negotiate. Some people are successful, and others run into phrases like: “This is all that HR has allotted for the position, and it is not negotiable.” There are other factors that can compensate for a lower salary.
- Flexible work days or work at home two out of five days.
- More initial vacation days.
- A mid-year evaluation process with the possibility of a bonus.
- Special parking privileges.
- Choice of office space (choose between three open spaces).
- Special travel perks - personally get to accumulate air miles.
- Sick/personal days already accrued.
- New equipment: laptop, cell phone that the company pays for, ergonomically correct chair, company vehicle, etc.
- Stock options.
- Reduced “on-call” time.
