National Scholarships Opportunities
A number of highly prestigious national scholarship opportunities are available, many of which award substantial amounts of scholarship and/or prize money. These are not the only national scholarships available. This list, which will be updated from time to time, includes those programs for which UMW has established a faculty representative.
Barry S. Goldwater Scholarship: Scholarships for outstanding sophomores and juniors with a strong record and potential who intend to pursue careers in mathematics, engineering, or the natural sciences.
UMW Faculty Representative: Debra Hydorn
U.S. Fulbright Grants: Scholarships for recent B.S./B.A. graduates to support one year of study, teaching, or research toward the goals of personal development and international experience.
UMW Faculty Representative: Nabil Al-Tikriti
Harry S. Truman Scholarship: Scholarships for juniors covering academic expenses for graduate school who desire to a difference in society through public service.
UMW Faculty Representative: Porter Blakemore
Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Fellowship: Fellowships for graduate school for up to six years of study. Available to current students or alumni up to five years after graduation in any field.
UMW Faculty Representative: Porter Blakemore
James Madison Fellowships: Fellowships for graduating seniors and graduates who intend to teach at the secondary school level to pursue Master’s degrees American History, Government, and Social Studies.
UMW Faculty Representative: Wendy Atwell-Vasey
Marshall Scholarship: Scholarships for graduating seniors and graduates for two to three years of study at any British university or business school. Deadline: October 4, 2007
UMW Faculty Representative: Bulent Atalay
Morris K. Udall Scholarship: Scholarships for sophomores and juniors who plan a career in environmental fields. Also available are scholarships for Native American sophomores and juniors in the fields of health care and tribal public policy.
UMW Faculty Representative: Debra Harber
Rhodes Scholarship: Scholarships for graduating seniors and graduates for two or three years of study at Oxford in any field. Deadline: October 9, 2007
UMW Faculty Representative: Bulent Atalay
Mitchell Scholarship: Named after former Senator George Mitchell - this scholarship funds the study of 12 students to the Republic of Ireland or to Northern Ireland. Deadline: October 6, 2007.

Churchill Scholarship: Named after Winston Churchill, this scholarship pays for one year of graduate study in engineering-mathematics-or the the sciences at Churchill College, University of Cambridge. Deadline: November 12, 2007.
