Foreign Language Testing, January 5, 2010

If you plan to continue your language studies in French, German, Latin, or Spanish, you should take the online language placement test. If you are switching to a new language (from what you studied previously) or are planning to take one of the other languages offered at UMW, such as Arabic, Chinese, Greek, or Italian, you do not have to take the placement test.

The login information for these tests appears in the middle of the “home” tab on the EagleLink portal. Look for the flags – you can’t miss them! You may take tests in multiple languages, if you so desire.

The language tests will be available January 5, 2010.

After completing the test, you’ll be given information about the appropriate course level you should start in for that language. If you take the French, German, or Spanish test, you’ll receive a score report as soon as the test is completed. If you take the Latin test, you’ll need to go to the page titled “What Your Score Means” to find out the information about course selection.

Depending on what score you achieve, you may be invited to a second-stage test to more accurately place you in the highest intermediate-level or the appropriate upper-level course. In some cases, the results of the second test will tell you that you have satisfied the UMW language requirement as a result of the placement testing.

Persons eligible for the second-stage testing will be contacted by email to their UMW email address.

If you encounter any technical problems using the online language tests, you should contact the UMW Help Desk at 540-654-2255 to report the difficulty and to receive basic trouble-shooting assistance
