The slide library is a primary resource of department faculty and students, who use its slides in lectures, presentations, and coursework. The library includes the following: Photo - Slides

  • 80,000+ slides (primarily in Western art & architecture)
  • Two light tables
  • Projector trays
  • Limited collection of films

Approximately 3,000 new slides are added each year.

The Collection

Library holdings include extensive coverage of Western art and architecture, as well as sufficient course coverage for Asian art (including India, China, Japan, and Southeast Asia). Other non-Wester cultures include Africa, Native America, and Central America. There are also holding on graphics, museum studies, photography, and maps and teachings (for media and techniques).

Inventory

Since 1994, new slides added to the collection are enteredinto a permanent information database and labeled using Filemaker Pro software. The purpose is to create a comprehensive inventory of the collection through which users can access slides according to title, site, subject matter, artist, media, and date.

Circulation & Access

With prior approval of the Slide Library director advanced students may acquire access to the slide collectionfor use inindividual study projects and student presentations. Potential borrowers are encouragedto visit the Slide Library and receive an overview of the collection, as well as learn about borrowing policies and making new slide requests. Library personnel will assist student users in locating images, as necessary. Anyone who borrows images must follow library procedure and abide by its policies. (The library may also be used at the discretion of Art History or Studio Art faculty when slides areneeded for course projects.)

Equipment

In addition to a copy stand, a camera and tripod for producing slides of photographs or artwork are available upon request. Please check with the Slide Library director for more information.
