Pre-Conservation Curriculum

Students interested in pursuing graduate studies in the conservation of art are advised to take the following Studio Art and Chemistry courses (in addition to the requirements for the Art History major). The selection is based on a study of the entrance requirements for a number of graduate schools of conservation, including the University of Delaware's Winterthur Program in the Conservation of Artistic and Historic Objects.

I. STUDIO ART = 21-24 credits*
2D Design (ARTS 101) = 3 credits
3D Design (ARTS 102) = 3 credits
Ceramics I or Sculpture I (ARTS 111 or 231) = 3 credits
Drawing I (ARTS 221) = 3 credits
Drawing II or Life Drawing II (ARTS 222 or 314) = 3 credits
Painting I (ARTS 343) = 3 credits
Suggested additional course:
Photography (ARTS 241) = 3 credits
II. CHEMISTRY = 16-20 credits
General Chemistry I (CHEM 111) = 4 credits
General Chemistry II (CHEM 112) = 4 credits
Organic Chemistry I (CHEM 211) = 4 credits
Organic Chemistry II (CHEM 212) = 4 credits
Suggested additional course:
Analytical Chemistry (CHEM 252) = 4 credits

* A portfolio of works produced in the Studio Art classes should be kept for submission to graduate schools, as required.
