(Jocelyn Mitchell, Untitled, 2002)

Honors in Studio Art acknowledges outstanding achievement in the major, as demonstrated by the quality and depth of a student's work. To apply, eligible students must submit a portfolio, hold a senior exhibition, and give an oral presentation of their work in the show. The awarding of honors is competitive and made to select graduating seniors at commencement. (Application for honors does not insure receipt of honors.)

I. Application Procedure

A. VERIFY ELIGIBILITY: before applying for honors, you must meet the following criteria:
  • have a 3.5 minimum G.P.A. in the major
  • have a 3.25 minimum G.P.A. in the overall degree program
  • have participated in Major Assessment
  • will hold a Senior Exhibition the semester in which you are applying
  • are currently enrolled in an Individual Study in Studio Art or plan to before the end of your senior year

B.L.S. Studio Art majors are eligible to apply if they meet the above requirements AND their core area program is consistent with that prescribed for the B.A. degree (determined by advisor and reported to Chair).

B. SUBMIT A LETTER OF APPLICATION: if you meet the above requirements, submit a letter of application to the department Chair, requesting consideration for honors. Your letter must include the following information:

  • name
  • the statement: "This is my formal application for Departmental Honors in Studio Art"
  • expected date of graduation
  • degree sought (B.A. or B.L.S.)
  • major advisor
  • overall G.P.A.
  • major G.P.A.
  • Individual Study courses taken and in which currently enrolled
  • departmental Media Awards and scholarships received
  • expected date of Senior Exhibition

C. SUBMIT A PORTFOLIO: no later than one day after your senior exhibition opens, submit a portfolio of your best work to the department Chair and Studio Art faculty. Work selected should illustrate your artistic development in the program. (See "Senior Assessment: Portfolio" for more details.)

D. HOLD A SENIOR EXHIBITION: during the semester in which you apply for honors, you must hold a senior exhibition. (See "Senior Assessment: Exhibition" for more details.)

E. PRESENT AND DEFEND YOUR WORK IN THE EXHIBITION: at the time of your senior exhibition, arrange to meet with Studio Art faculty in duPont Gallery to present and defend your work. Focusing on the pieces in the show, address your conceptual, technical, and stylistic developments in the program.

II. Notification of Honors

The decision to award honors will be made by Studio Art faculty late in the semester. The chair of the Studio Faculty Committee will notify you by letter.

III. If You Receive Honors

Upon notification of selection for honors, you are required to submit your portfolio (in the same manner as for senior assessment) to Special Collections in Simpson Library by the last day of your final semester (December or May). It must include a self-made cover sheet with the following text (centered):
