Senior Exhibition: Selecting & Hanging Works

Ultimately, it's up to your group to decide which works will be in the show and how they'll be displayed. The Student Supervisors will offer guidance, but the selection, placement, and hanging of works is up to you.

Selecting Works

duPont Gallery Several weeks before the show, the Student Supervisors will meet with you to discuss all aspects of the exhibition process, particularly options for installing works. At that time, you should have a general idea of which pieces you'd like to include, so that a rough layout can be made and special needs anticipated (i.e. more pedestals, permission to paint walls, etc.). Proposals for special installation or construction must be submitted to the Assessment Coordinator for departmental approval four weeks before your show opens. No exceptions.

What to Choose
duPont Gallery Choosing works for the show, as a group, can be particularly challenging. You might have a lot of good work--or work that you particularly like--from which to choose. Because it's good or you like it doesn't mean it should be in the show. Consider pieces that are strong AND work well within the group.

Installing an exhibit is like working on a piece, as you develop it, you must let go of certain ideas or parts to strengthen the whole. A few suggestions:

  • Less is more.
  • Activate the piece. Don't just display it.
  • Make the exhibit work as a whole.

Hanging Works

As previously mentioned, the Student Supervisors will assist you in installing the show. Special tools and equipment will be provided to hang pieces, as well as pedestals for displaying ceramics and other work. You must work with the supervisors to arrange for times to work in the gallery.Emily Williams, Untitled, 2001

Please keep in mind the following:

  1. The gallery is not a studio .
Works should be ready to display before they are brought into the gallery. No activity that might damage or discolor the walls, floor, or furniture (i.e. spray painting, mat cutting, sawing, etc.) is permitted.
  2. Keep the pedestals and floor clean.
Do not hammer into, scratch, or otherwise disfigure the floor and pedestals.
  3. Put tools away and clean up before the opening.
After the exhibit is installed, return all tools and equipment to their proper storage spaces. As well, remove all trash from the gallery and arrange (with the Student Supervisors) for housekeeping to dry-mop the gallery floor before the show opens.
