Forum on Student Research

October 5 (Fall) for Forum October 24, 2007;
February 8 (Spring) for Forum March 18, 2008
The Department Forum offers a venue for Art History and Studio Art majors to present advance-level projects at an interim stage. Projects most often include Individual Studies and work intended for senior exhibitions. The forum is intended to stimulate the sharing of ideas about work and research among students and faculty.

Required Participation Participation is required or strongly encouraged for students pursuing the following:

Eligibility
Art history and studio art majors are eligible to apply. Majors outside
of the department whose work is supervised by an Art History or Studio
Art professor are also eligible.
What's Required
Two hard copies of both a cover sheet ( see section "Cover Sheets")
and essay are required. The essay must be typed using Times Roman only, double-spaced, on white
paper, text only, and no longer than two pages; this is a professional document. . In the essay, 1) discuss
the nature of your project, and 2) state explicitly which aspect of
this study you propose to present at the forum.
Selection
Projects with a strong focus and stimulating concept are strongly considered
by the Faculty Review Committee. In addition, the committee
will focus on clear prose and statement of intention in the essay, accuracy
of information, and good writing skills.
All applicants will be notified by the Department Chair of the committee's decision by campus e-mail (your UMW address).
The Forum
Audience
Art history and studio are faculty will be present to offer constructive
criticism after each presentation. Students, faculty, and staff are
welcome to attend the forum and ask questions, as well.
Presentation
The presentation should be clear, concise,
and offer a progress report on the project; the length of your presentation
must adhere to the requirements issued upon approval. If the project
focuses on works of art, they should be presented visually through slides,
video, or other electronic media. (Slide and computer projectors
are available in the lecture rooms.) All presentations must be rehearsed
with your faculty advisor; competency in technology you use is required.
Post-Presentation
After each presentation, art history and studio art faculty will provide
constructive criticism, ask questions, and monitor the discussion between
the presenter and the audience.
