Transfer Credit

As per college-wide policy, up to 50% of the major program (Art History or Studio Art) can be transferred from other institutions. Not all courses taken at other institutions will transfer to the major program.

Obtaining Approval for Study Abroad

To earn credit in your major program at UMW while studying at a foreign institution you must obtain the approval of your major advisor and the Chair. The procedure for seeking approval is as follows:

  1. Submit your study plan to your major advisor for initial review. Also include descriptions for the courses you plan to take. Your major advisor will determine their equivalency to UMW courses (contacting the Office of International Programs for more information, if necessary).
  2. If your major advisor approves, he or she will instruct you to seek approval from the Chair.
  3. Once received, the recommendation for credit transfer will be reviewed and approved (or not) by the Chair.

Taking these steps allows the Chair to process your request in a judicious fashion. All such requests for study abroad credit must be made to the Chair through your major advisor. No exceptions.
