"The images below are from a series entitled mort main , which addresses history through the lens of painting. The term "mort main" is derived from the French, meaning a dead hand. A more contemporary translation speaks of a handing over of authorship, which I assume through the manipulation and reinterpretation of the Dutch artist Rembrandt Van Rijn's paintings. Using domestic imagery as my vehicle, I navigate the problematic world of identity and gender." - Carole Garmon

"The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp is the second in a series of installations that address the work of Rembrandt Van Rijn. Executed in life-size scale, the "painting" incorporates a clean white outline depicting all but one of the characters in the piece. The main character, Dr. Tulp, is represented by a large-scale color transparency that is mounted on the wall according to his position in the painting. Across from the image of Dr. Tulp is a sculpture/prop designed to incorporate the viewer's hands as s/he steps into the sculpture and assumes the mirror image of the doctor. I use the hand as the catalyst in this piece as it is the central focus of all acts performed in the installation: dissection, painting and the act of making sculpture."
