***
"My sculptural porcelain vessels are composed of thrown and handbuilt parts, glazed, partially acid-etched, with applications of underglazes and overglaze gold. The series below, entitled "Neo-Baroque Vase", began as an attempt to incorporate something of the beauty and intricacy of early European porcelains into a twenty-first century, personal aesthetic. In part a borrowing, these pieces move beyond the charming tours-de-forces of their precious, floral inspirations into a world of ruthless contrasts of line, texture, and color. I have tried to balance these incongruities, creating an aesthetic symbolic of the balance between nature and industrial society, one based upon the precarious improvisations that seem so necessary for survival in our times." - Lorene Nickel
