General Education Class List Prior to Fall 2008
Beginning in Fall 1993, students who have earned an Associate's Degree (except General Studies or Applied Science degrees) for the Virginia Community College System, automatically fulfill the general education requirements.
The requirements for general education credits in each area of study are as follows:
Natural Sciences and Mathematics (10 credits)
At least 4 credit hours of a lab science and at least 3 credit hours of math are required. The remaining 3 hours may be math, science, or mathematical applications such as computer science, music theory, or logic.

Literature (3 credits)
One course focusing on the close reading and interpretation of literary works written either in English or a foreign language is required.

Humanities (3 credits, in an area other than literature)
One course from a discipline such as art, theater, art history, film studies, music (other than music theory), classics, foreign language, philosophy (excluding logic), or religion is required.

Social Sciences (3 credits)
One course (other than research methods) in anthropology, economics, geography, linguistics, political science, psychology, or sociology is required.

Western Civilization (3 credits)
One course examining the intellectual foundations, developments, and consequences of western civilizations, such as western philosophy, European or American history, or western religion.

Competence in English Composition
Each student must demonstrate competence in English composition. This may be accomplished by taking English 101, Writing Workshop, completing a comparable writing course, or through UMW Department of English, Linguistics, and Speech certification.
