Transfer work and Degree Requirements
Transferable credit may count toward degree requirements. Be aware that course work counting in the major must be approved by the department chair. Also, courses not already designated as speaking or writing intensive by transfer articulation agreements must be approved by the appropriate faculty committee. Generally, courses that fulfill the global awareness or race/gender requirement must be taken at UMW. See the following links for more information.

Transfer Credit limits
BLS students can transfer a maximum of 90 credits into UMW. There are four categories of transferable course work:
Transfer Source |
Credit Limit |
Traditional Classroom Experience |
90 |
College Level Examination Program |
30 |
Military Education and Training |
30 |
Portfolio |
30 |
Traditional Classroom Experience
Students may transfer up to ninety credits of traditional liberal arts course work from an accredited college or university. See the following website for transferability of classes taken at a Virginia Community College. If the course is not listed, contact the BLS office for further information.
Students interested in attending another institution must fill out a Transfer Permission Request form. This form is available online at the Registar's Webpage. Permission must be granted prior to registering at another institution. Classes taken at another institution counting in the major must have the approval of the student's major advisor and chairperson of the academic department.
Upon successful completion of coursework, the student must have an official transcript sent directly to the Office of the Registrar.
If a student has transferred ninety credits into UMW and still wishes to take courses at another institution to fulfill an academic requirement, the student must first delete the required number of credits from the official record to make room for the new transfer work. A Deletion of Transfer Credit form must be submitted to the BLS Office before the new credit can be entered.
College Level Examination Program Credit (CLEP)
BLS students have the option of receiving credit through the College Level Examination Program. CLEP credit is considered transfer credit and limited to a total of thirty. The exams are computer-based and are scheduled individually by contacting Priscilla Sullivan @ psulliva@umw.edu. See the following link for a list of currently accepted exams.
College Level Examination Program
Military Education and Training
The American Council on Education has evaluated most formal military and training experiences for possible college level credit. Official ACE transcripts should be sent to the Office of Admissions during the initial admitting process for evaluation. No more than thirty ACE credits can be applied toward the BLS degree. This includes all military, government, and corporate/professional training. See the following link for further information.
Portfolio Credit
Students enrolled in the BLS program may choose to develop one or more portfolios regarding prior learning experiences that occurred outside of the traditional classroom setting. These experiences may include education or training that they received while in the military or working in the corporate world. Also included in these experiences may be hobbies and community service activities where training or education took placed. Whatever the setting, many adults have gained important college-level knowledge that may be equated to college credit. Portfolio credits are considered transfer credits. The maximum number is usually fifteen credit hours. In special cases an evaluator may award up to thirty credits. See the following link for more information.
