Trace the roots of the “liberal” in liberal arts education and you’ll find the French “liber,”meaning “free.” True to that origin, a UMW liberal arts and sciences education will free your mind for an
infinite range of possibilities.

It accomplishes this in a variety of ways. First, every student gets broad exposure to a range of disciplines and methods of academic inquiry. Through our general education requirements, you’ll have opportunities to explore art, history, communication, science, human behavior, global awareness, and other areas of study. Equally important, you’ll learn how these different fields fit
together and influence each other—how science shapes public policy, for instance, or how history influences global conflict and cooperation. And you’ll learn why understanding these connections
is vital for responsible decision-making.   Our curriculum also provides the flexibility of creating your own major or combining two established majors. Special Majors require approval and combine courses from two or more disciplines. Students have designed programs in Linguistics, African-American Studies, International Business, Italian Studies, Asian Studies, Public Affairs, Journalism, Human Resource Management, and Women's Studies.

Students who double-major can combine any of the majors currently offered; for instance, a psychology/business administration combination might appeal to the student interested in human resources. Other combinations might include music/psychology (music therapy), studio art/biology (medical illustration), or philosophy/political science (pre-law).

See "Major Courses of Study" for the list of all major areas available at UMW.
