The Bachelor of Liberal Studies (BLS) degree is designed for adults who want to major in one of the traditional arts and sciences disciplines. As a BLS student you can choose from more than 30 majors offered at UMW or you can create your own interdisciplinary major. A maximum of 90 semester hours of transfer credits may be used to fulfill the requirements for the BLS degree. The BLS degree requires a minimum of 120 semester hours, distributed in three categories: general education, electives and major.

Students in the BLS program attend classes on the Fredericksburg campus and follow the traditional college schedule. Most classes meet during the day, but there is a limited selection of evening classes offered. You can enroll in the program as a part-time or full-time student.

The General Education component of the curriculum differs somewhat from the BA/BS requirements (For example, BLS students are not required to take foreign language and physical education courses), but still enables the BLS student to explore a variety of subjects in the arts, natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences.

Our curriculum also provides the flexibility of creating your own major or combining two established majors. Students have designed programs in Linguistics, African-American Studies, International Business, Italian Studies, Asian Studies, Public Affairs, Journalism, Human Resource Management, and Women's Studies.

See "Major Courses of Study" for the list of all major areas available at UMW.
