Meritorious New Teacher Candidate Designation THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN DISCONTINUED
The Mid-Atlantic Regional Teachers Project (MARTP) has established the designation of the Meritorious New Teacher Candidate Designation (MNTC) as a symbol of excellence to acknowledge highly qualified teachers when they graduate from their teacher preparation institutions. This designation is not a new certificate, but rather an optional designation, similar to the Merit Scholar designation or Distinguished Diploma for high school students.
The MNTC is fully certified to teach in any MARTP state.
Each of the six MARTP states – Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia – has agreed to accept the MARTP criteria for the Meritorious New Teacher designation. Because the new teachers who achieve this designation will be eligible to teach in any of the six mid-Atlantic states, they will not have to meet any additional state requirements. New teachers who have met the rigorous criteria for this designation will be fully certified to teach in any of the cooperating states, and reciprocity provisions will be worked out in each cooperating state. The MNTC designation is available to those graduating from teacher preparation programs beginning in 2004.
For more information and the criteria for the MNTC, please visit the website of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education at: http://www.aacte.org/Programs/MARTP/aboutmartp.cfm
Upon completion of the UMW Teacher Education Program you will be asked if you have met the criteria to become a MNTC designee. If the criteria has been met, you may submit an application with your licensure paperwork to the Education Department for approval and processing.
