Creative Writing Concentration
The Creative Writing Concentration, centered in the Department of English, Linguistics, and Communication, will offer students the opportunity to focus on the craft and art of writing, editing, and analyzing their own original work and the work of established writers and peer writers within a selected genre. Students in the Concentration will fulfill all the core requirements of the major as well as the requirements for the new Concentration. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be prepared for further studies in literature and/or writing and editing, as well as the more traditional post-graduate careers. The Concentration will offer three different levels of workshops: introductory, intermediate, and advanced. Students can, through work in a senior seminar or through independent study, achieve honors in creative writing. The regular departmental requirements for honors apply. The concentration may be completed by pursuing a fiction or poetry track, and eventually, a creative non-fiction track. The Department is pleased that we will be hiring a new professor in creative non-fiction who will start in August 2008.
The concentration requires:
- Linguistics 101
- 15 hours in writing courses (including 302A, Introduction to Creative Writing; 314, The Literary Journal: Professional Practice in Publishing and Editing; and a 400-level Creative Writing Seminar
- English 295
- One 300-level course in linguistics
- 3 courses in literature, one of which must be a course that predominantly teaches one genre, as appropriate for a student's individual track. Consult with a faculty advisor for course offerings that fulfill this requirement.
- One elective course in the major
The department recommends that students who begin the concentration their junior year will have
at least one semester in which they take two writing courses, or they may take a course in the concentration if it is offered during the summer.
