Entering Class Profile: Fall 2008
This profile is intended to provide a general picture of the students who were admitted and enrolled by UMW in the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science degree program for the fall of 2008. Any statistical portrait is limited in its ability to describe the full range of individual differences among students who are enrolled by the University. UMW does not admit students by any rigid formula and we seek to enroll a diverse and well-rounded student body.
The Freshman Class
The Admissions Committee reviews each candidate's file individually, giving careful consideration to all aspects of the record. The Committee places strong emphasis upon the quality of the student's secondary school curriculum. Successful candidates present records of sound preparation for study in the liberal arts and sciences. Advanced, honors-level, and Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate course work is highly encouraged.
The Committee on Admissions reviewed 4,600 freshman applications for the fall of 2008. The Committee offered admission to 3,258 candidates. 917 students enrolled as first-time freshman for the 2008 Fall Semester.
Multicultural Diversity
The University of Mary Washington strives to enroll a student body that is culturally and ethnically diverse. In 2008, sixteen percent of the entering students identified themselves as African-American, Asian, American-Indian, Hispanic/Latino or Multiracial.
Secondary School Performance
The University of Mary Washington views each freshman candidate's academic achievement in the context of his or her particular high school. When evaluating high school performance, we give consideration to the course offerings and academic character of each secondary school. Applicants who are admitted to UMW have excelled in strong programs of study, typically including Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or similar honors level and advanced classes. Although there is much variation among high schools, grade point average is one important descriptor of the academic quality of the freshman class. The table below shows the percentage of freshmen whose grade point averages fell within specified ranges.

Standardized Testing:
The SAT or ACT is only one factor among many considered for admission. There is no minimum acceptable test score and in each freshman class, students present a very wide range of SAT-I scores.
The following tables display distributions of scores for 2008 freshman candidates. The "Middle 50%" indicates the range into which fell the middle one-half of all scores. Therefore, 25% of the scores were above this range while 25% were below the range.

Geographic Distribution:
The 2008 freshmen graduated from 154 public and 42 private high schools throughout Virginia, as well as from 155 public and 55 private high schools in other states and countries. Freshmen came from 32 states besides Virginia and from 15 other countries.Twenty six percent were from outside Virginia, with the largest numbers enrolled from the following states:
MD (48), NJ (28), NY (26), PA (23), CT (20), MA (15), DC (8), NC (8), NH (8), CA (6), VT (5), CO (4), FL (4), OH (4), DE (3), IL (3), GA (3), ME (3), RI (3), SC (3), TX (3).
