- Dawn S. Bowen, Associate Professor of Geography has been awarded the prestigious Henry H. Douglas Distinguished Service Award for 2009. The Award is named in honor of the founder of the Pioneer America Society: Association for the Preservation of Artifacts & Landscapes, Mr. Henry H. Douglas, and is given to an individual who has made significant contributions over the years in furthering the Society's goals through service, teaching, publications, and/or the promotion of historic preservation.
- Members of the sixth grade class at Fredericksburg Academy recently paid a visit to the Geography Department. Dr. Jackie Gallagher explained to them what geographers do, and led some hands-on activities with maps and models of the solar system. (See full article on this event.)

- Ten Year Program Review and Action Plan. In 2005, the Geography Department underwent our regular ten year review. On the basis of this review, as well as our own goals for the coming years, we have put together a ten year action plan for the Department. Mary Washington alumni, students, faculty and friends to keep up with friends, contribute their ideas and expertise to the Department and make professional connections. The new site does not take the place of this official website; it complements it by providing a forum in which members, students, alumni and friends of the Department can communicate with one another.
