Old Requirements for the Geography Major
(until Fall 2007)
The Geography Department will be implementing a new set of major requirements beginning in Fall 2007. Below are the major requirements in effect until the new major begins. If you are already a geography major, the old rules below apply to you. The new major will apply to all students declaring a geography major in or after January 2007. If you are a recently declared geography major and have any questions about which requirements you need to follow, please see your academic advisor. If you are a prospective major and have questions, please contact any of the Geography Department faculty members, who will be happy to answer your questions.
The Geography major requires 39 credits distributed as follows:
1. Foundation Courses (18 credits)
Courses totalling 18 credits selected from the list below:
- Geography 201 - Introduction to Human Geography OR Geography 205 - Geography and Civilization
- Geography 210 - Physical Geography I
- Geography 211 - Physical Geography II
- Geography 250 - Elements of Cartography
- Geography 299 - Geographic Methods
2. Regional geography (6 credits)
Two courses (6 credits) consisting of one course from 2a AND one course from 2b.
2a) North America
- Geography 221- Eastern North America
- Geography 222 - Western North America
2b) Foreign Region
- GEOG 300: Geography of Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific
- GEOG 301: Geography of Latin America and the Caribbean
- GEOG 303: The Geography of Europe
- GEOG 304: The Geography of the Middle East and North Africa
- GEOG 305: The Geography of Sub-Saharan Africa
- GEOG 307: The Geography of Asia
- GEOG 360: Geographic Study Abroad
3. Systematic geography(6 credits)
- Geography 310 - Human Environment
- Geography 336 - Economic Geography
- Geography 337 - Urban Geography
- Geography 338 - Political Geography
- Geography 339 - Geography and Development
4. Geographic Techniques (3 or 4 credits)
One course (3 or 4 credits) chosen from the following:
- Geography 330 - Introduction to Planning
- Geography 340 - Remote Sensing and Air Photo Interpretation
- Geography 351 - GIS and Automated Cartography
- Geography 365 - Field Methods
5. Seminar in Geography(3 credits)
One seminar (3 credits) in geography:
- Geography 490 - Seminar in Geography
6. Internship
Internships are graded as Pass/Fail courses and, therefore, cannot count towards the Geography Major.
7. Elective courses
Additional elective geography courses as needed to make up the 39 credits in the major.
NOTE: Fifty-five credits in any one discipline is the maximum which may be counted in the 122 credits required for graduation.
