Position: Full-time, twelve month position. The University of South Dakota is seeking a dynamic and creative Gallery Director to provide vision and implementation of all aspects of the University Art Galleries. The Director will be responsible for organization, management and installation of exhibitions supporting the educational goals of the art department in multiple art galleries on the university campus. Duties include: Develop and communicate a vision for the University Art Galleries (UAG), which includes the John A. Day Gallery, the Oscar Howe Gallery, 110 Gallery and other galleries/displays on campus; develop and promote exhibition and educational projects in respective galleries and display areas on and off campus; develop educational components related to exhibitions and that support the educational goals of the Art Department; represent the UAG to cultural organizations and at official functions; maintain gallery equipment and premises; supervise and mentor student workers and staff; prepare quarterly and /or annual reports for submission to the UAG Committee and Dean of the College of Fine Arts; seek grants and fundraising opportunities on local and national levels with college dean’s support; develop and promote awareness of the UAG through a variety of print and public presentations; provide strategic planning for short and long range development; monitor the galleries’ budget and allocate resources; develop and supervise staff to ensure the galleries’ goals and university personnel and EEO/AA requirements are met; continue to build upon the foundations of the UAG collections and ensure that collections are safely collected, conserved and displayed; may teach in the Art History Department and/or College of Fine Arts depending on qualifications. Other duties as assigned. Appointment begins August 2010.
Qualifications: An energetic and detail oriented candidate with strong communication skills. The candidate must have a terminal degree in the arts or in a field appropriate to the position (Museum Studies, Art History) or an MA or MFA in Art. Experience in gallery administration and exhibition is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Rank and Salary: Assistant Professor, salary based on qualifications.
