Collections Manager/Assistant Curator

The Hofstra University Museum is an AAM accredited fine art museum, with two gallery spaces and an outdoor sculpture collection located on the 240-acre campus of Hofstra University. The Museum is dedicated to being a vital partner in the educational, pedagogical, and cultural life of the University as well as the greater New York metropolitan region. It strives to achieve its mission through adherence to the highest professional standards in its collection, preservation, exhibition and interpretation of works of art.

The Collections Manager/Assistant Curator (CM/AC) will professionally manage and care for the 4,500 objects in Hofstra University Museum collections, including maintenance of all collections, object records, and storage areas. The CM/AC develops and maintains appropriate AAM and other professional standards, policies and procedures, for the care and handling of works of art and artifacts. The CM/AC should possess in-depth knowledge of conservation theory and practices. The position involves all aspects of acquisition, registration, cataloging, deaccessioning, digitization, environmental control, loan processing, insurance, records computerization, storage maintenance, and information retrieval in response to research requests. The CM/AC has responsibility for coordinating and/or curating at least one exhibition per year. This individual also has responsibility to train and work with undergraduate and graduate student interns and assistants.

The Collection Manager/Assistant Curator will work well in a team atmosphere and support the development of educational and public programming for the University community and the general public. The CM/AC will have responsibility to develop, plan and implement short and long-range goals for the management of the collection, it is important for this individual to possess the ability to use independent judgment to manage and impart information.

The Collection Manager/Assistant Curator is supervised directly by the Museum's Assistant Director of Exhibitions and Collections who reports to the Executive Director.

Qualifications: The Hofstra University Museum seeks an experienced professional who holds either an M.A. or M.F.A. degree in Art History/Fine Arts/Anthropology/Museum Studies from an accredited program. The candidate should have five (5) years experience managing a collection as a Registrar, Assistant Registrar, Collection Manager, Curator of Collections or a comparable position.

The successful candidate will be flexible, creative, have excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to maintain accurate records and documents, have strong computer skills, knowledge of IO or other collection database cataloguing software, and graphic imaging (Photoshop preferred), as well as being adept at developing and maintaining a personal work schedule. The position requires a person who will develop and support scholarly access to the collection and has knowledge of art history as well as interest in, and personal hands-on experience with, the curatorial process. It is preferred that the candidate have knowledge and understanding of copyright and reproduction regulations.
