The Library of Virginia, Picture Collection Internship

Brief Description of organization:

The Picture Collection in the Special Collections department of The Library of Virginia contains photographic collections, slides, transparencies, artwork on paper (lithographs, engravings, etc.), tobacco labels, sheet music, postcards, posters, currency, programs and pamphlets.

Hours:

Scheduling flexible during normal business hours, 9:00-5:00 Monday through Friday.

Position Information:

Intern will assist in the daily work of the Picture Collection by working with the three staff members of the Picture Collection on researching patron requests, photography issues, and conservation orders. May also occasionally assist the rest of the Special Collections department with various duties.

Specific projects to work on will include:

learn and apply organizational techniques and Library of Congress subject headings
assist with data entry for collection information
picture research and organization of slide collection
re-house collections
assist with conservation orders

Expectation:

Someone who is self-directed, enjoys learning new things, and is familiar with computers (specifically Word and Access programs). This person should be flexible and appreciate a variety of assignments. Attention to detail and accuracy is needed.

Must be able to pass a Virginia State Police security check.

When Offered: Spring, Summer, Fall

Deadline: One month before a student expects to start the internship.
