Ham Caldwell Memorial

In May, 2005, Hamlin Caldwell, a longtime and very popular adjunct instructor in History, passed away. Two memorials have been established in his memory. One is a bench along the walkway between Seacobeck and the Ridderhof-Martin Gallery. The inscription on the bench plaque reads:

In loving memory of Hamlin A. Caldwell, Jr. February 28, 1931 - May 2, 2005 A man of warmth, wit, and humor who delighted in sharing his passion for history, social justice and lively political debate with the young men and women he was privileged to teach. |
The photo above was taken following the ceremony dedicating the bench on November 4 (left to right: Department Chair Carter Hudgins, Mr. Caldwell’s two children, Arnold and Delight, and his widow, Kathleen, a Mary Washington graduate.
Also at the ceremony it was announced that the Hamlin Caldwell Scholarship has been established to provide financial assistance to a history major who has demonstrated high academic achievement and an interest in those humanitarian goals cherished and promoted by Mr. Caldwell. The scholarship will be awarded for the first time in April, 2006, to become effective in the 2006-07 academic year.
