The Department’s Fall Lecture Series, part of a course on religious liberty taught by Distinguished Professor Carter L. Hudgins, concluded with two outstanding lectures by visiting scholars. On November 14, Dr. Catherine Cookson, Director of the Center for the Study of Religious Freedom at Virginia Wesleyan University, spoke on “Regulating Religion: When the Free Exercise of Religion, Isn’t,” a presentation based on her recent book, Regulating Religion (Yale, 2001).

On November 28 the final lecture of the series, “Faith and Practice in Contemporary Politics,” was delivered by the noted champion of religious liberty, Dr. James Dunn of Wake Forest University Divinity School. Dr. Dunn has been acclaimed by former President Jimmy Carter as one who “stands tall for the separation of church and state, which is essential to preserving [religious] freedom.”
