Which Mathematics course should you take?
Calculus I and II (MATH 121 and 122) are required for the following majors:
- Chemistry
- Computer Science
- Mathematics
- Physics
Calculus is valuable knowledge for students in any major, particularly Biology, Economics, and Environmental Science. A full year of calculus is typically required for admission to medical, dental, or veterinary school.
Discrete Mathematics (MATH/CPSC 125) is required for the following majors:
- Computer Science
- Mathematics
Introductory Statistics (MATH 200) is required for the following majors:
- Business Administration
- Sociology
- *Geography (not required but counts towards the major)
Statistics is valuable knowledge for students in any major, and is critical knowledge for most students in the sciences and social sciences. Knowledge of statistics is strongly recommended for any student planning to attend law, medical, dental, or veterinary school, or graduate school in any of the sciences or social sciences.
Four other Mathematics courses fulfill the Quantitative Reasoing requirement (and the old Goal 2 General Education requirement):
- MATH 110, Finite Mathematics
- MATH 115, Introduction to Mathematical Modeling
- MATH 207, History of Mathematics
- MATH 210, Statistical Methods
MATH 115 is especially recommended for students planning to major in Biology and the other sciences.
Students should choose a mathematics course that will challenge them and help prepare them for future study. The analytical skills developed in mathematics courses are highly valued in any career track.
