UMW in Erfurt, Germany

UMW Studenten in BerlinThe Department of Modern Foreign Languages at UMW is offering a summer course in German language and culture taught on site in Erfurt, Germany. Located in the state of Thuringia near the Thuringian Forest and the Wartburg Castle, Erfurt lies roughly halfway between Frankfurt and Berlin-about two hours from each city. This bustling city of 200,000 offers a broad range of cultural events, good shopping, and an active nightlife. The surrounding area affords virtually unparalleled outdoor recreational opportunities such as swimming, hiking, running (Waldsport), and mountain climbing.

In the course students will explore various aspects of this region with particular emphasis on its art, architecture, local customs, music, and dramatic literature. For example- and depending upon the plays and musical events running in the various theaters in Erfurt , Weimar, and Dresden - students will read and discuss with their professor certain plays or operas before seeing them performed on the stage. Students will also attend with their professor concerts and folk festivals, and visit important historic sites, museums, and galleries in Erfurt, Dresden, Berlin. Day trips to Weimar, Gotha, and Eisenach are also planned.

UMW Studenten in ErfurtFor purposes of the course, UMW has established a link with the University of Erfurt. Students will have ample opportunity for contact with German students from the University. German discussants and guest lecturers, as well as German student Gesprächspartner are planned components of the class. The course carries four credit hours that count either toward the German major or as elective credit. Prerequisite for the course is German 202 or equivalent.

 

Qualified students at UMW as well as from other colleges and universities are invited to apply. Enrollment will be limited. Students must have good academic standing and must have completed the appropriate prerequisites by the beginning of the course. Application deadline is January 15, 2009

Duration of the course: four weeks: June 14 - July 12, 2009

  • Lodging: Participants and faculty will be housed at a private dormitory in Erfurt.

  • Excursions (including transportation, meals, and lodging in Berlin and Dresden)

Program costs: $3,333.00 (double occupancy) $3,555.00 (single occupancy)
