Requirements for the Major

The Music Department requires students to take a certain number of credits in music performance, music theory, and music history. All students are required to demonstrate proficiency in at least one performance medium through a juried performance their senior year.

The minimum requirements in the table below show heavier loads at the beginning which thin out during the junior and senior years. This complements the reverse for many other majors. Thus, many students can conveniently have double majors.

Students who begin the music major sequence at the beginning of the sophomore year combine the junior and senior courses into the fourth year.

Most students continue private lessons and/or ensemble participation through more than two years.

The college limits all students in all majors to 60 credit hours in any single discipline to be counted within the 120 to graduate (for music majors: any MUTH, MUHL, MUPR, or MUED designation). Students may take more than 60 in a single discipline, but they must exceed 120 to do so.
