REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POLITICAL SCIENCE MAJOR

(OLD RULES)

Note: These major requirements apply to students who declared a major in political science during the 2006-7 academic year, as well as those who declared in earlier academic years.

 

36 Total Credit Hours Required

Required Courses (24 Credits)

  • 101 & 102 Introduction to Political Science (6) [Prospective majors should enroll in 101 & 102 during their first year]
  • 201 American Government (3)
  • 301 Politics of Western Europe (3)
  • 302 Politics of the Soviet Successor States (3)
  • 321 International Theory (3)
  • 441 & 442 Political Thought (6)

Elective Courses (12 credits)

To be chosen from departmental offerings, excluding required courses.

 

NOTE: Political Science internship credit (PSCI 499) does not count towards the 36 required hours in the major.

Honors/Independent Study

Each year several students in Political Science and International Affairs avail themselves of the opportunity to pursue honors and independent study projects. Examples of such projects in the recent past have included: "Counterinsurgency in the Philippines," "The Shining Path in Peru," "Independent Peace Movements in Eastern Europe," "The Latin American Debt Crisis," and "Conservatism in America."
