COVER LETTER
The purpose of a cover letter is to get the employer interested in reading your résumé. The cover letter is a global look at the skills that qualify you for the position. It is not a word for word recount of what is in your résumé. In the first paragraph of your cover letter state what position you are applying for, where you saw the job posting, and why you are interested in the position or company.
In the next paragraph, you will explain who you are and what skills you have which qualify you for the position. Highlight two to three skills that you have and describe what experiences have helped you to develop these skills, or examples of how you use these skills effectively. For all other skills you have that you were not able to elaborate on, you should add a sentence that states that you “have many other skills including…”
The final paragraph will include a “fit” statement, depicting for the last time why you are qualified for the position. These will be qualities that you have not necessarily mentioned before. Also, thank the employer for his/her time and indicate what your next step will be (“I will wait to hear from you”).
Tips:
- Cover letters should be about half a page in length, and not more than one page.
- Always address the cover letter to a person and include their title and address.
- Sign cover letters using “Sincerely” and then you name.
- Print cover letters on résumé paper and have the same margins as your résumé.
