First-Year Residence Halls

All residence halls are equipped with laundry rooms, vending machines, kitchens, TV rooms, lounges, study lounges, and most with recreational space.

Both standard twin size mattresses, measuring 36" x 75" x 6", and extra long mattresses, measuring 36" x 80" x 6", are found in our residence halls. It is recommended you purchase either extra-long sheets or sheets with “deep pockets” to ensure they fit on either mattress.

If you are 6’3” or taller and require an extra-long mattress, please submit your request in writing to our office.

Window sizes vary from building to building and room to room. Window shades are provided by the University.

Smoking is not permitted in any of the residence halls.

Alvey Hall

Alvey Hall

 Alvey is a first-year residence hall, named for Edward Alvey, Dean of the Faculty from 1936-1971. Alvey, a co-ed residence hall, houses 145 residents and features suite bathrooms.  Alvey is located near Simpson Library, Goolrick Hall Gym, the Fitness Center, as well as the Jepson Science Center. Alvey is also the closest residence hall to Giant and the shopping complex!Each floor is supplied with a centrally located kitchen, study lounge and laundry room. The kitchens’ amenities include a microwave, an oven, a refrigerator, counter space, and cabinets. For that late night snack during finals, vending machines are conveniently located in first floor lobby, which also features a TV lounge, complete with a big screen TV!

Custis Hall

Custis Hall is a co-ed residence hall named for Mary Custis, the wife of General Robert E. Lee. Custis is one of three buildings, which collectively comprises the Tri-Unit, along with Ball and Madison.  Kitchens are centrally located on the 2nd and 3rd floors, amenities include a microwave, an oven, a refrigerator, cabinets, and counter space. Kill two birds with one stone and sate your sweet tooth while doing your laundry. Vending machines and the laundry room are located on the basement floor. Additionally, there is also a spacious air conditioned lounge and study area provided on the basement floor, where residents often gather for movie nights around the big screen TV, Hall Council programs, and study sessions! Custis is envied for its smaller community-oriented atmosphere.

Custis is home to the First-Year Experience Program . It houses 42 first-year men and women on three floors and has suite bathrooms. It is conveniently located in the center of campus.

Jefferson Hall

Jefferson

Jefferson Hall is a co-ed first-year residence hall named for Thomas Jefferson, president of the United States and founder of the University of Virginia. Jefferson Hall is adjacent to Combs, where the English, Linguistics, Language, and Speech Departments are housed. Approximately 192 students live in Jefferson. The building features hall bathrooms. There are both double and triple rooms in Jefferson. The 1st through 4th floors have two kitchenettes per floor, one in each wing of each floor. Kitchenettes include microwaves, sinks, counter space, and cabinets. However, the kitchenettes do not provide ovens or stoves. Both the laundry room and vending machines are located on the basement floor.  The first floor includes a lobby, provided with a beloved ping-pong table, a plethora of furniture, and a big screen TV! The large field in front of Jefferson, shown in the photo above, is often populated by students soaking up the sun, studying under the large shady trees, lounging in the Adirondack chairs listening to someone strumming their guitar, or just playing a game of football. There is nearly always someone out on the field when the weather is right!

Mason Hall

Mason is a co-ed first-year residence hall named for Thompson Mason, whose son George wrote the Bill of Rights. Located just off the central campus walk, Mason is part of the Randolph/Mason complex. Mason, a mirror image of Randolph Hall, is home to approximately 207 students. Mason features suite bathrooms. The second, fourth, and fifth floors are provided with kitchens. Kitchen amenities include a stove, microwave, refrigerator, counter space, and cabinets. To restore your strength after doing your laundry, vending machines and the laundry rooms are both located on the second floor. Additionally, the second floor features a lounge complete with a big screen TV! Study rooms are located on the third, fourth, and fifth floors. Mason offers triples, some of which are provided with lovely built-in bookshelves and cabinetry.

Russell Hall

Russell hall

Russell Hall is a co-ed first-year residence hall named for Edward H. Russell, first president of Mary Washington College. Russell is home to approximately 173 residents and features a large split-level lobby, and hall bathrooms. There eight kitchenettes and lounge areas in Russell, one located at each end of every floor. Kitchenette amenities include a microwave, a sink, cabinets, and counter space. However, no ovens are provided. Both the laundry room and vending machines are located on the basement floor. The bottom half of the split-level lobby features a TV lounge, complete with a big screen TV! Russell also features an elevator. Since Russell’s beds are designed to double as sofas, its rooms are particularly conducive to a sociable atmosphere! Russell is a five minute walk from Hyperion, the local Fredericksburg coffee house, as well as all the other wonderful downtown Fredericksburg stores and restaurants!

VIRGINIA HALL

Virginia Hall

Virginia Hall is a first-year, all-female residence hall named for the Commonwealth.  Virginia is home to approximately 183 women and features both hall and suite baths. Virginia is located in the very heart of campus and has excellent views of the campus from all four sides. Each room offers beautiful hard wood floors. There are three kitchens in Virginia (one on each floor). Kitchen amenities include a refrigerator, a stove, an oven, counter space, and cabinets. Both the vending machines and the laundry rooms are located in the basement.  In addition, Virginia features a spacious and luxuriant parlor. Parlor amenities include a big screen TV, wall to wall carpeting, and lots of comfy couches and armchairs! Virginia is less than a minute from the Nest, one of your meal plan dining options, and its adjacent lounge, the Washroom, which features pool, video games, and so much more!
