Second Year Experience Community
(SYE)
What is SYE Community?
The Sophomore Year Experience Community is a continuation of the First Year Experience Community program. Members of the SYE Community, focus on personal, academic, and career development. Participants of the program explore alternative degree paths, participate in job shadowing, and acquire the building blocks to become a marketable employee through exposure to internship opportunities, study abroad experiences, and in cover letter and resume writing seminars.
Additionally, participants of the program mentor the FYE Community. The mentors assist UMW faculty and staff in small group discussion with FYE Community members on leadership development topics.
What are the benefits of the program?
- Students live on a floor section in a larger community which allows them to have the familiarity of knowing their floor mates and the opportunity to interact with other UMW students.
- Students are exposed to resources on campus and within the Fredericksburg community through specialized programming focused on self exploration and career development.
- Students are given the opportunity to reflect on their freshman experience, their sophomore experience and set goals for their future.
- Leadership skills acquired during their freshmen year are utilized in their mentoring of freshmen students in the FYE Community.
- Collaborate with UMW Faculty and staff in the co-facilitation of small group leadership discussions with FYE Community members.
