THE WRITING INTENSIVE PROGRAM'S NINETEENTH ANNUAL STUDENT WRITING CONTEST

This contest is open to all Mary Washington College students. An interested student should submit a double-spaced, clean, revised copy of what he or she considers his or her best paper of any length written for any MWC course during the relevant calendar year - in this case, 2009. A student may enter two or more papers if the papers were written for different courses. Entries should be nonfiction prose (essays, research studies, reports, etc.); creative writing should be submitted instead to the student literary magazine, Aubade . Papers written in a foreign language should be translated into English for submission.

The Writing Intensive Program tentatively plans to award prizes of $100 each for winning papers in each of the categories listed below. The number of winners per category will depend on the number and quality of entries for that category. Contest officials reserve the right, however, to combine or divide categories - or create additional ones - depending on the number, nature, and quality of entries. For example, we might divide a large category into two competitions, such as freshman/sophomore and junior/senior. We might create separate competitions in the Natural Sciences and/or the Social Sciences categories, dividing papers into those based only on library research and those based on student research in the field.

Contest Categories:

Freshman Seminar: papers written for freshman seminars

Arts and Humanities (A & H): papers written for English,   Speech, Classics, Philosophy, Religion, Modern Foreign Languages, Art,   Dance, Theatre, and Music.

Social Sciences (SS): papers written for Sociology, Anthropology,   Geography, History, American Studies, Historic Preservation, Linguistics,   Psychology, Political Science, International Affairs, Economics, Business   Administration, Education, Health, and Physical Education.
