The Honors Program in Philosophy

The degree "Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Philosophy" signifies distinction and excellence in the study of philosophy at the undergraduate level. The following provides some general information. Students who may be interested in pursuing honors should speak to their advisors.

General Requirements

  • an overall GPA of at least 3.2
  • Phil 491 and 492 during senior year
  • a substantial written thesis
  • an oral, public defense of the thesis
  • deposit of hte thesis in CPR and Simpson libraries

Procedures for application

In the spring of junior year, a student who meets the basic requirements to pursue honors should meet with philosophy faculty members about the selection of a topic and advisor, then submit an application to the Chair. This application must be in writing and must include:

  • tentative title of honors project
  • name of instructor who will direct and advise the student
  • an initial bibliography of books and research materials the student intends to consult

During the first week of classes in the fall, following a summer of reading, the student must submit a 10-page proposal describing the project as a whole. If the proposal is accepted, the student proceeds with Phil 491 in fall and Phil 492 in spring.
